Shadybrook Lane is a small, but wealthy, community surrounded by a forest owned by the residents. It's named for the distinctive shade-covered path that winds through the forest beside a small stream.
The forest is surrounded by a low fence with “No Trespassing!” signs.
The majority of the residents are members of an extended family that makes their living producing and selling fine wine. There's a medium-sized vineyard on the same plot of land that provides the grapes for their business.
The leader of the village is Gilda Shylton.
The residents of Shadybrook Lane are all members of the Rayna clan, either by birth or by marriage. The Rayna clan is composed principally of Human Witches and Warlocks. Many of the family (about a quarter) are members of the Shadowed Eyes. There are a few Elves married into the clan and quite a number of half-elves mixed in.
Angel runs a pawn shop in Shadowgate on Shadow Reef and serves the Shadowed Eyes as a fence. She's the daughter of Theria.
The true leader of the clan is Guild Master Ellora Rayna of the Shadowed Eyes. She's the daughter of Theria and the head of the coven composed of all the female leaders of the village.
Most of the children in the village call her “Aunt Ell.”
In truth, Gilda is not the leader of the village, but she does serve as the public face of the clan. She handles negotiating prices for the wine and the purchase of outside supplies. This is largely because she's charismatic and friendly.
Karen is the daughter of Theria, but she's also an outcast from the family, due to their entanglements with the Shadowed Eyes and her own affiliation with the Law Keepers. She's a member of the Terrible Trio of the League of Adventurers.
Sora is the reincarnation of one of the Crusaders of Light, reborn in each generation to someone in the clan. She does not remember much of her previous incarnations.
This state of affairs was brought on by a variation of the Borrowed Time spell. The clan has been attempting to help Sora complete the task she set for herself, but has met with little success.
Sora has been Theria's mother, cousin, niece, daughter and grand daughter (with varied numbers of the word great before it). The family relationships just get stranger from there.
The oldest living member of the clan, Theria is grandmother (or great grandmother, or great great grandmother, etc.) to most of them. No one is certain of her age, but she's at least 900. Theria hasn't left her cottage in over a decade.
Theria is quite adept with magic of all kinds, having studied both wizard magic and witchcraft. Her talent is the greatest in the family, save only Thurman.
Thurman is a ghost. He's the eldest son of Theria and has been dead for over 800 years. He died in an assault on Shadybrook by a group of covert witch hunters.
In the process of defending Shadybrook Manor, he was convinced by the tenacity of the assault that drastic measures were in order. He cast a powerful spell (Borrowed Time) that would bring him back in an undead form if he fell in battle. He was killed, but his murderers were quite surprised to discover they'd only made him stronger. He tore into the trespassers with his new abilities and ended their lives, leaving them as withered, dry husks.
Unfortunately, due to the nature of the spell he used, he's now bound to protect his family home, or his ghostly existence will end. Furthermore, he cannot leave; he can go as far as the fence, but cannot cross it.
Thurman leads a coven of warlocks whose primary concern is the security of Shadybrook. The members of his coven are the male leaders of the village. He's also the most powerful spell-caster in the entire family, surpassing even Theria, his first teacher in the magical arts. Most archmages would struggle to even reach a stalemate in a magical duel with him.
Walter always hated his name, so after moving out of the village, he took on the name Odnom Orazzib. He's currently a member of Lilly and the Outsiders of the League of Adventurers.
Walter is the son of Angel McCade.
The village sports a small chapel. Most in the village are Children of the Shadow. The priests that work in the chapel are members of the clan, but no one is quite certain who they are.
This is the only road leading in from the outside, eventually ending in a circle at the center of the village. In the middle of this circle are statues of the Clan's greatest heroes, the Crusaders of Light.
This is the largest building in the community. Most of the direct family of Ellora live here, including a number of her brothers and sisters, as well as their spouses and children. More often than not Ellora herself is not around, due to her work with the League of Adventurers and the Shadowed Eyes.
This is where all the day to day work in the village occurs.
Theria lives separately from most of the clan, for the sake of peace and quiet. Her small cottage is hidden in the farthest reach of Shadybrook, with a small lake nearby. This cottage serves as the meeting place for the leading coven.
