Summons an Elemental. There is one version of this spell for each of the elements and their combinations. Some of these are rarer and/or more difficult to pull off.

The Earth, Air, Fire and Water variants are common.

Para-element variants are uncommon, except Ice, which is common. There is also an Acid variant that comes from the border between the Plane of Water and the Plane of Ooze. It's also uncommon.

Quasi-elements are rare, except Lightning and Radiance, which are very rare. These two spells do exist, but are considered collectors items more than useful pieces of magic.

There are also variants of this spell for Positive and Negative Material that summon creatures known as Positive Fundamentals and Negative Fundamentals. These variants are unique, as almost no one has even heard of them.

Finally, there are also a few types of Composite Elementals that can be summoned with this spell. These are usually living storms of one kind or another and require a similar, pre-existing storm to summon them. The Tempest variant requires a cloud composed of water vapor to summon and is rare.

There is no recorded case of a lightning elemental being successfully summoned, as the only way one is likely to ever be summoned is for the caster to be struck by lightning at the exact moment of completion of the spell. This would, quite naturally, probably kill the caster.

There is no recorded case of a radiance elemental being summoned either, as there is no known source of pure radiance available aside from the sun and the Plane of Radiance, and since the sun is decidedly out of reach…

Vacuum elementals, on the other hand, have been seen before. They're summoned by first creating an enclosed space containing no air. This is usually done with the Explosive Decompression spell. Next, Summon Vacuum Elemental is cast from a safe distance. Now, since all elementals are walking vortexes to their home plane and there's nothing on the Plane of Vacuum, the air rushes toward the elemental and is drawn through, pulling just about everything with it. So, effectively, Vacuum Elementals are similar to walking, miniature black holes.

The caster may send the elemental back at will as long as it's still under their control.

The caster has the ability to control the elemental for the duration, but this requires continuous concentration. If the caster fails in this, the elemental becomes uncontrolled and usually seeks revenge (12 or less on 3d) on the caster or goes home using it's Jumper ability. Control may be re-established in the interim, if it seeks revenge. An elemental that has already chosen revenge will attempt it again each time control is lost.

Any elemental that has gone berserk will stay and fight until the berserk fit is over or it's dismissed by the caster. It will only attack foes specified by the caster if controlled. If uncontrolled, it will attack everything.

Water elementals may be summoned using ice, but they will have to be thawed before they can do anything.

An elemental's Jumper ability allows it to take things with it when it returns home under it's own power. It can transport people and/or equipment to it's home plane, as long as they're SM +1 or smaller. This is a fairly easy way to get to an elemental plane, but it's one way. The reasoning behind this ability is that their body forms a natural elemental vortex.

Asking an elemental to “take me somewhere safe” will usually involve taking the summoner to the elemental's home plane, which it considers very safe. They don't seem to realize that this can be lethal for their summoner.

It should be noted that elementals hate being summoned. They always react badly to this.
