Varvara keeps her "hair" tightly bound and strapped down on her back. This is very uncomfortable for her, but is necessary to obscure her identity. If even the slightest movement were seen, it would give others an identifying characteristic to look for.
She's an abberation among Medusa, in that she finds cruelty distasteful. She is cold and callous, but does not enjoy hurting others, like many of the rest of her race. It wasn't long before she became an outcast.
Seeking refuge, she donned a veil and carved a niche for herself in the seedy underbelly of human society, but she wasn't exactly comfortable there.
It was during this time that she encountered a priest from the Children of the Shadow. She listened to his message and found that it filled a place in her soul she never knew was empty.
Eventually, she became a priestess herself, as this affords her the privacy she craves.
