Notes

Karen is an expert at thief-catching techniques. She's spent years tracking them down to bring them to justice. She's a Law Keeper, and more than that, she's one of their special agents charged with catching difficult criminals. She believes in the letter of the law and always does her best to serve it. She will arrest her adventuring companions on the spot if they break the law.

Back in the old days before the League and the Shadowed Eyes made peace, she was one of the best at catching them. Because of this, they put a very high price on her head. At least six different assassins came after her and she spent nearly six months on the run from them. This ended when the non-aggression pact was signed.

The assassin that got closest to her is a Coleopteran, a race of giant beetle people. He nearly killed her on four occasions. This is why she has a phobia of insects.

She is still being harrassed by a small group of rogue Shadowed Eyes. They're holding a grudge for her having arrested many of their comrades. When the non-aggression pact was signed, they refused to be party to it. They do little more than make her life difficult, but she treats them like pests: she arrests them if she gets hold of them, but doesn't otherwise bother with them. From her perspective, they're beneath her.

She has a family; a husband and son. They occasionally show up at inopportune moments, as she and her husband are not currently getting along well. Sadly, this is fall-out from the ordeal of being hunted. She came back from the experience cold and callous, with occasional bouts of hallucinatory flashbacks. She cares for her family, but hasn't been able to be the kind and loving woman she once was.

One final important detail: Karen is the half-sister of the Guild Master of the Shadowed Eyes, Ellora Rayna. This makes her a witch, even though she has no training in the magical arts. It also makes her a member of the Rayna clan and has given her the ability to sense the presence of witches and warlocks.

She does not get along with her family, having rejected them entirely for their law-breaking ways. She has even tried to kill her sister on multiple occasions. Guild Master Rayna responded in kind, hiring assassins to do her in. There are still bad feelings between them from this, but in they both put on a mask of politeness when they have to share a room.
